Voting Party Results

Today during one of the lunch hours, we hosted a voting party for the next Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award winner. Eleven enthusiastic students enjoyed pizza, prizes, laughter, and good conversation about this year's nominees. Overheard at this year's party:

"I just got so emotionally connected to that book." - It's Kind of a Funny Story
"The writing was honest. I need an author who is honest, and this one was." -- Catch
"This book stuck with me. I read it last year, and I've read seventeen books on this list since then, and I still remember Hawksong."
"The characters were concerned about other people. Our society is mostly 'all about me.' Even though they cared for others, it worked out okay for them too." - Hawksong
"I read it in, like, two hours. I couldn't put it down." - The Warrior Heir
"It's about overcoming adversity, getting back up after something bad happens. It's the only realistic fiction I've ever really liked. That says a lot." - The Tenth Circle

"I wish I had more time to read!"
"WOW. I haven't read any of these books. I need you guys to give me a list of, like, the best books EVER."

When one student said she was voting for Hawksong, two others exploded in cheers and applause. With three votes, Hawksong is the winner at PR!

PR's Votes:
Hawksong - 3
The Warrior Heir - 2
Looking for Alaska - 2
Three Cups of Tea - 1
Crank - 1
It's Kind of a Funny Story - 1
Dairy Queen - 1
The Tenth Circle - 1

One of our students explained how she got to be a Student Member of the Abe Award Reader Panel for 2010. We're looking forward to seeing next year's titles after the selection meeting hammers out the list.

It was fun! See you at next year's party. :)
